Performing

Artistic Statement

"Playing music and communicating with people ... no matter the language, cultural differences, or beliefs; to be able to touch a heart, create feelings, and possibly change a life, is what makes music worth it for me."
- Carlos Bedoya

Carlos enjoys performing as a soloist and as a chamber musician in different settings. He also likes to participate in competitions and outreach opportunities through the internet or live in communities.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

All people deserve the privilege of receiving musical training. Music enriches life.  It enhances our strongest emotions, and it is always there for us when we need it. No matter the age, talent, circumstance, or end-goal, everyone should experience the joy of understanding and appreciating the beauty of this timeless art.

Why learn classical guitar?

The principal benefit of learning classical guitar is that it focuses on the development of an ergonomic technique along with the development of an academic understanding of music. The student will develop healthy mental and physical habits of music learning which will open the doors to an easy and successful transition to or use of any other style of playing. The student will be encouraged to learn how to learn and create their own knowledge, allowing them to become an independent musician and a better pedagogue. In addition, all of these learned behaviors can transcend the practice room, thus positively enhancing other aspects of the student's life.

Experience

Carlos has gathered extensive teaching experience through his appointments as Assistant Instructor in guitar at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, as Graduate Assistant at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University, as well as an instructor in several other music schools and private studio.

Additionally, Carlos also provides free guitar video lessons through YouTube in Spanish (with English subtitles). Check out his channel content by clicking on the button below.

"Carlos is a genuinely outstanding teacher. His attention to detail, superb musicality, and years of experience allow him to diagnose *exactly* what is holding his student back and immediately form a roadmap for them to correct it. My playing skyrocketed after only a few months with Maestro Bedoya. I can't thank him enough!"
- Isaiah Sherfick, former student

Composing and Arranging

Although most of his time is devoted to performing and teaching, Carlos also occasionally arranges and composes his own music. He has composed music for solo guitar, chamber music including guitar, and other pieces for choir and voice. Although his arrangements revolve around guitar music, Carlos has also arranged works for jazz band, choir, and a cappella voice. Some of his recent endeavors include a solo guitar work commission by the Guitar Foundation of America, and a guitar arrangement of "Amicizia" by composer Daniel Fisher.

Besides his interest in increasing the repertoire for the guitar through composing and arranging, Carlos also has a shy love for improvising. You can check out some of his improvisations in his Instagram page.

Conducting and Singing

Aside from his bachelor's in music education which focused on choral pedagogy, Carlos is currently pursuing a minor in choral conducting at the Jacob's School of Music. In 2016, he was a featured student conductor during Rowan University's Concert Choir Europe tour. He's also held positions as choir director at the First Presbyterian Church of Glassboro in NJ, and St. Joseph's Pro-Cathedral in Camden, NJ where he also served as music director and lead cantor.

As a "baritenor", Carlos has sung in choirs for most of his college years, having gained entry into the Rowan University's and Schwob School of Music's elite choirs. Aside from his ensemble singing, Carlos also believes that the voice is one of the best music teachers for any instrumentalist. He encourages that all musicians should use their voice to help shape their musical decisions.
